Bulk buying 'could help fleets cut fuel costs'

By working together to purchase their fuel en-masse, public sector fleets could save millions of pounds, it has been suggested.

In proposals by Kent county council it was stated that local authorities and other public sector organisations - such as schools and police forces - should agree a fixed price to buy petrol, up to 18 months ahead of making the actual purchase, FleetNews reports.

Kevin Harlock, director of commercial services for the council, claimed that the "ball started rolling" after hearing about a bus company which - through bulk buying - had purchased fuel for some 70p per litre.

He said: "We thought that if enough local authorities could collaborate on forward buying, we would all be able to benefit."

Now other public sector bodies are being asked to consider such a scheme, in news that might interest those looking for fleet insurance.

Last week a FleetNews article revealed that fleet managers are now uncertain whether petrol or diesel is the most cost-effective fuel option for their vehicles.
