'Various reasons' for spike in young people unemployment rates
There are a number of reasons for the sharp increase in unemployment rates among young people, it has been reported.
Nicola Smith, senior policy officer for economic and social affairs for the TUC, states a rise in jobless levels for those between the ages of 18 and 24 may be attributed to the fact they have not been in a position for very long.
She reports that people who have only been in work for a short length of time may not be entitled to statutory redundancy pay or protection from unfair dismissal.
"It can be for this reason that they are more likely to be made redundant first," the policy officer for the trade union reports.
Furthermore, Ms Smith suggests that as young people are more likely to be in low-paid positions or on a casual or temporary contract, when businesses look to make redundancies it is these workers who are likely to go first, in news that might interest those on the search for employer's liability cover.
In addition, it was indicated that the industries young people are moving into have been hit particularly hard by the global financial turmoil.
Her comments come after TUC research showed that there has been a 12.8 per cent quarterly increase in the number of young people who have been unemployed for up to six months.
